  Dr. Kyla Kuhns "Dr. K"

Dr. Kyla Kuhns

Dr. Kyla Kuhns (“Dr. K”) grew up in nearby Mattoon on a small hobby farm and fell in love with animals and science (her dad was the local high school science teacher) at an early age. Her childhood was spent caring for a variety of animals including cats, dogs, sheep, cows, pigs, horses, chickens, goats, rabbits, and even a pet raccoon. After high school, she completed a Bachelors in Science at the University of Illinois. She then followed her heart to vet school at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. While in vet school, she was active in the Wildlife Clinic, the Illinois State Veterinary Student Medical Association, the Reptile and Amphibian Club, Exotics Club, and the Christian Veterinary Mission Fellowship Club (where she spent a week in Haiti teaching and running makeshift vet clinics). She owned ferrets, rats, a tortoise, and a variety of snakes and lizards during vet school, in addition to fostering dogs. She graduated vet school in 2004 with Highest Honors. She practiced in C-U for 14 years before purchasing Okaw Veterinary Clinic in 2018.

Dr. K married her high school sweetheart, Andrew, who is an ecologist at the U of I. They live in Philo with their 2 children. They have a 3 legged Rottie named “Roman”, a 1 eyed Rott mix named "Hooey", a crazy miniature poodle named “Dr. Leonard Hofstadter”, a 3 legged cat named "Oscar", a cat named "Kori" and a flock of chickens. Dr. K runs on coffee and chocolate and can often be found with her nose in a book or working a logic puzzle. Her other passions include garage saling, cheering on the Illini, and raising autism awareness.
